There is no problem with building a flat bottomed aluminum boat except.....you will need a lot of framing for the bottom. if you use something like 0.125 thick aluminum, then you will need a honeycomb like structure to keep the bottom skin from panting badly.. Factor in building material and weight when selecting plans to build a fast flat bottom boat. while aluminum and fiberglass are the lightest materials, equating to greater speed potential, they are also the most expensive, and potentially more difficult to work with because it requires welding, molding and shaping skills.. The point is, many alternatives can be used to build an aluminum boat with largely the same results in terms of strength, durability, etc. f.b. = flat bar: key member steel aluminum a bottom plating 3/16" 1/4" b side plating 10 ga. 3/16" c keel.
